Friday, May 15 – Petworth and a drive around West Sussex
Our final “sleep in.” We decide to visit the next town west – Midhurst. Again, the streets are lined with shops. We find a parking place (they are very dear) and begin our stroll around the village. Karen finds and purchases two “pie birds.” She already has a huge collection at home. Pie birds are small ceramic figures, placed in the center of a baking pie, with a hole in the top to let the steam escape as the pie is cooking. We are overwhelmed with antiques; however, the shipping issue and the huge volume to choose from turns us off. I never thought I would see the day when Karen had reached her antiques shopping limit.
We get a local lunch suggestion from a shopkeeper. Comestibles is a deli with a few seats. We order the recommended bowl of soup and a Blackwell Tart – a fine lunch. Of course, I purchase several different “snacks,” including a jar of espresso martini balls. In their window, we spot several English “Glorias.” Our NYC artist friend Steven Rudin joined Karen in a Puerto Vallarta ceramics studio where he created the original “Gloria.” I love photographing the old buildings.

Next, we are off on a road trip to Land’s End. A stop at the beach is particularly interesting. The shore is filled with small, colorful storage sheds. I assume families store their beach gear inside. It is way too chilly to have any beachgoers today. Filling the rental car on our journey back to Petworth becomes the next goal. Gas stations are few and far between. There are none in Petworth. Thanks to my Apple Map, we detour to find one. I am totally surprised that our Range Rover takes diesel. Once again, we marvel at the beauty of the landscape – the rolling green hills, the green road tunnels, the colorful trees and hedges.

Back in Petworth, we have dinner at E Street Bar and Grill. Wow – the second-best dinner of this trip! And they made the DuncanTini perfectly. Karen’s Baked Alaska was the very best we have ever had. This was a perfect ending to a wonderful week.
