Day 3

Monday – May 11 – London

London is beautiful! Great old buildings, narrow crowded streets, people from all parts of the world walking, sometimes rushing, to wherever. London is truly a melting pot for the world. We love it here.

I was up early this morning. We visited a great chocolate, sweets, coffee shop yesterday – Carpo – very near our hotel. Nope, I will return to Starbucks tomorrow.

Karen is on a quest for a new nightgown. Oscar de la Renta no longer makes her favorite. The logical place to shop is Harrods,  probably the largest and most elegant department store in the world. The problem with Harrods is its immense size. We finally found the lingerie section, but, alas, nothing that fit Karen’s taste. We did enjoy a fine lunch at one of the six restaurants in the main dining hall.

Off to the Victoria and Albert Museum. We had read about their Schiaparelli fashion exhibition as well as an American photography show. The Schiaparelli was sold out a month in advance, and the photography show was good, not great. The really outstanding part of our experience was the incredible building and the numerous rooms filled with all their treasures. I looked it up (actually Siri told me), the building is 12.5 acres housing 145 galleries. Unbelievable! And so very, very beautiful!

We did a bit of shopping on our way back. I have a favorite on Regent Street – ARKET. I always find really cool clothes at very reasonable prices, and it’s not a bad walk from there back to SOHO and our hotel.

We scheduled a special dinner tonight for our friend and the architect of our Lincoln home – Demetri Porphyrios. We were joined by his wife, Natalia, and their daughter Atalante. It was like “old home week.” We shared memories punctuated with lots of laughter. We wrapped up the evening with promises to get together soon back in London, in Nebraska, or in Puerto Vallarta. It was a very fine ending to this London stay.
